Antigone #2

Analyze the characters' decisions. Pick one of the following choices made by either Antigone or Creon and tell me what you think was his or her motivating force(s) and the consequences for himself/herself and quite possibly others.

1. Antigone's choice to bury her brother despite the king's edict
2. Antigone's decision to insult Creon when he confronted her
3. Antigone' refusal to allow Ismene to share her guilt
4. Creon's decision to issue the edict against Polyneices' burial
5. Creon accuses Teiresias of accepting bribes
6. Creon's decision to give in to the counsels of Teiresias

The reason why Antigone chose to bury her brother is because she acted on love. She loved her brothers and for Creon to bury only Eteocles and not bury Polynices too. Her love for her brother was to much for her to handle, so she had to give him a burial. She gave Polynices a burial at the cost of her own life.

Antigone chose to disobey the king's edict and bury her brother because of her love and respect for him. She felt the king had been unfair in issuing the edict. Antigone had loved each brother equally and thought that each had deserved a glorious burial. The results or her actions caused Antigone to lose her life. Her actions also resulted in her sister being wrongly accused of being Antigone's accomplice.

Creon accuses Teiresias of accepting bribes

Creon accused Teiresias because he refused to accept the validity of his prophecy. His prophecy was the complete opposite of what Creon had claimed was right and of what he had wanted to occur. To accept it meant admitting he was wrong, which he had too much pride to do, even when faced with the opposition of the gods. The consequences of his obstinacy not only affected himself, but others as well. He caused the death of innocents, including his own wife and son. With these losses, Creon was left with nothing but remorse and suffering.

Antigone's decision to insult Creon when he confronted her

Antigone insulted her ruling uncle because even though he and her brother
Polyneices were blood related, Creon dishonored his nephew’s corpse by not performing the appropriate rites; he also left it to decay and for the beasts to devour. Antigone’s outrage at the mistreatment of her brother's body made her dismiss the danger that she faced by burying him. When Creon confronted her and accused her of committing a crime, she talked to him with disdain and hatred because her compassion for her family and its honor made her fearless regarding death, which she knew would be her fate for defying her uncle. The only character who could be accused of assisting Antigone commit the "crime" was her sister Ismene, who tried to take some responsibility for her sister's actions, but only because she was so guilt ridden for not having helped Antigone honor their deceased brother. Antigone would not have her take part in the punishment though, and her sister was spared.

Antigone's Choice to Bury Her Brother Despite the King's Edict

Antigone ignored the king's edict because she loved her brother. Polynices fought, as Eteocles had, and she felt Polynices deserved a proper burial as well. She loved her brother, and respected him too. Her love and respect for Polynices ended up bringing her to death.

Antigone chose to bury her brother because she believes he deserves the right to go to the afterlife just like Eteocles. Creon's edict was unfair and harsh. Antigone loved her brother and wanted the best for him, even if that meant going against her uncle. She felt obligated to help Polyneices by burying him, and she believed he would do the same for her. Antigone was motivated by doing what she believed was right, and being a loyal sister to her deceased brother which caused her to go against the king's edict.

Antigone refuses to allow Ismene to share the blame in the burial of her brother, because if she allowed Ismene to share the blame, then she would surely be put to death. In order to save her sisters life Antigone refuses to claim that Ismene had any part in the burial of her brother. Antigone only denied Ismenes' claim out of pure love for her sister. Ismene had chosen death along side of Antigone, but Antigone had seen no reason for both of them to die so Antigone chose to die alone in hopes that Ismene would live a wonderful life.

Antigone's choice to bury her brother Polyneices was because no matter what Creon thought or said, that was her brother and no one could change that. Antigone acted upon what her heart told her. She knew by not burying her brother the gods morals would be disrespected. She understood that if caught she would die. That did not stop Antigone in fact, she did not care if people knew what she had done. Antigone wanted them to know that she was strong enough to disobey the city because of what she believed in. She knew if she would die, she would die with honor. In the end Antigone shared the fate polyneices had.

4. Creon's decision to issue the edict against Polyneices' burial

Creon thought it was necessary to issue the edict against Polyneices' burial because he thought he was a traitor to Thebes. Creon thought since Polyneices attacked the city to get his rightful throne, that his brother would not give up, he was being a traitor. In Creon's mind, when Polyneices died he did not deserve to be buried. He wanted to make that very clear so he made the edict saying that if anyone buried him, they would die. Creon's consequences for this edict would be great. It lead to Antigone to commit suicide. Which lead to his son, Haemon, and his wife, Eurydice, to commit suicide.

Antigone chose to bury her brother because she loved him and wanted him to be buried peacefully . She thought that the king was not being fair in issuing the edict. Disobeying the king did have large consequences such as losing her life and Ismene being blamed as an accomplice.

Antigone decided to bury her brother, because her love for him urged her to. The fact that her brother died was wounding. Knowing that she won't we able to give him a respectful, and proper burying ground only added insult to injury. Without an appropriate grave, she also wouldn't be able to mourn him correctly. The act of burying her brother would also mean defying Creon. Defying the ruler who has made such an inhumane law,is something she particularly doesn't mind. She would have gladly told it to anyone that she has dared to defy Creon, no matter what the consequences were.

3. Antigone' refusal to allow Ismene to share her guilt

Since Ismene took no part in the burial of Polynices, Antigone refused to let her share her guild in burying him against Creon's orders. When Antigone first shared her plans with Ismene about burying their brother Polynices, Ismene didn't want to aid Antigone because she feared the punishment for doing so. However, when Creon sentenced Antigone to death, Ismene claimed that she took part in the burial, just so that she would die with Antigone and not live a lonely life. This may have also contributed to Antigone's refusal to let Ismene share the guilt.

1. Antigone's decision to bury her brother despite the king's edict.

Antigone chose to bury her brother against the king's edict because she felt that her brother deserved the rites of burial just like her other brother. Just because Polycienes had been a traitor, does not mean that he doesn't deserve a fair burial like everyone else. Since Antigone loved her brother so much, and felt very strongly about her decision, she risked her life to give him the burial he deserved. The consequences of Antigone's decision ultimately ended in death. Creon's decision to give the edict resulted in the complete disintegration of his family.

Antigone decided to bury her brother regardless of the king's edict because she loved him and felt he deserved a fair and just burial instead of being torn to shreds by wolves. That love was, ultimately, the death of her but she decided she had to do it. That's also something that no one can truly understand unless they were put in that position. In her mind, the king acted unjustly by issuing the edict and so she did what she sought right.

1.)1. Antigone's choice to bury her brother despite the king's edict

Antigone chose to go against the king's edict to bury her brother so her brother's spirit could be set to rest. It was an act for his honor for her family and her brother as a leader. In the end she gave up her life for her deceased brother but she loved him so that drove her to do it. A combination of love, her brother's honor, and Greek views on afterlife made her go against the king and bury her brother.
